Monty, Olazabal fail to qualify for Open

Montgomerie shot a 3-under 136 for 36 holes at Sunningdale GC in Berkshire, England, to finish T-14 in the qualifier offering 10 spots into the field at Royal Lytham and St. Annes.

A total of 13 players finished at 4 under or better. Of those, eight were safe, leaving five players in a sudden-death playoff for the remaining two spots.

Thorbjorn Olesen, Lee Slattery, Oliver Fisher, Oscar Floren and Alastair Forsyth began the playoff, with Floren and Fisher eliminated when they were unable to par the first hole. Olesen was the first to get through, making birdie on the second playoff hole. A hole later, Slattery locked up the final spot with a par that Forsyth could not match.

James Morrison was medalist, setting the pace at 8 under. Sam Walker was second, two back of Morrison.

Aussie Marcus Fraser, who lost in a four-hole playoff for the BMW International Open on Sunday, qualified in a group tied for third. Alejandro Canizares, Richard Finch, Matthew Baldwin, Jamie Donaldson and Ross Fisher joined Fraser at 5 under.

Among other notables failing to qualify were BMW Open winner Danny Willett, last year's first-round leader Tom Lewis, Jose Maria Olazabal, Rich Beem and Matteo Manassero.
